Summary of crime:
From Gray v. Commonwealth [emphasis mine throughout]:
On the morning of January 1, 2006, Kathryn and Bryan Harvey and their two daughters, Stella and Ruby, were killed in the Harveys’ home in the City of Richmond. Firefighters, responding to a call that the Harveys’ home was burning, discovered the bodies of Kathryn and Ruby in the basement as they attempted to fight the fire. The house was filled with “black smoke” and the basement was burning and had “[z]ero visibility and a lot of heat.” Soon after the firefighters removed the bodies of Kathryn and Ruby from the basement, they determined that the bodies showed evidence of “battle signs” and that the victims’ legs had been bound. At that point the firefighters stopped their rescue efforts and summoned the police.
Detective Dwyer of the Richmond Police Department then discovered Stella in the basement under a futon “with her hands behind her back, tape around her mouth.” Bryan was discovered on the floor of the basement with orange electrical cord wrapped around his wrists and feet, with “melted tape around his face [and a] large wound to his neck area.” Detective Dwyer also found two claw hammers, two broken wine bottles, a knife handle and a separate knife blade in the basement. Those items, as well as several photographs of the scene, were admitted into evidence at trial.
An autopsy revealed that Bryan had been cut eight times in his neck and underneath his chin, and those wounds, although “[v]ery painful,” were not immediately fatal. His mouth had been gagged and taped. Six lacerations were made to the left side and back of Bryan’s skull, each caused by blows from a hammer. He experienced severe third degree burns to his skin. Bryan died from the wounds to his skull.
Kathryn had been cut three times in her neck and chest, once in her back, and those wounds caused bleeding and pain but were not fatal. Multiple lacerations were made to Kathryn’s skull as a result of blows from a hammer. The hammer blows caused a fracture to the plate above Kathryn’s eyes, resulting in bleeding behind her eyes. Kathryn died from the blunt force injuries to her head.
Ruby’s throat had been sliced through to her trachea, a wound that was not fatal but obstructed her breathing. Her head was also fractured and cut, causing brain tissue to exude from her skull. She had also been stabbed in the back with enough force that the knife had passed through her ribs and into her lungs. Ruby died from the blunt force injuries to her head and the stab injury to her lungs.
Stella’s neck had been cut six times, with the stab wounds having penetrated her trachea and esophagus. Stella’s head was also bludgeoned by a hammer, causing brain tissue to exude from her skull. She died from a combination of smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning and blunt force injury to her head.
Forensic evidence showed that the knife blade recovered from the Harveys’ home had traces of blood from Kathryn, Stella, Ruby and Bryan. Bryan and Stella’s DNA was discovered on the shaft of one of the recovered hammers. Kathryn’s DNA was identified on the handle of the other hammer.
Evidence at trial established that Gray, Ray Dandridge and Ashley Baskerville were driving the streets of Richmond in Gray’s van during the mid-morning of January 1, 2006 “looking for a house to rob.” Gray and Dandridge “spotted a door open” at the Harveys’ home, entered the house, and forced Kathryn, Bryan and Ruby into the basement.4 Stella was not home when Gray and Dandridge entered. In the basement, Gray assured the three family members that he and Dandridge would leave after they took what they wanted from the home. Gray then used electrical cords to tie Bryan’s wrists behind his back and bind his ankles together.

Before Gray and Dandridge could plunder the house, they heard a noise upstairs on the home’s main level. Kiersten Perkinson, a family friend, had arrived at the Harveys’ home to deliver the Harveys’ daughter, Stella, along with Perkinson’s own daughter, Grace Lynn, from a slumber party the previous evening.
Hearing the commotion, Kathryn explained to Gray that her daughter had returned from a slumber party, so Gray permitted Kathryn to go upstairs to bring her daughter downstairs to the basement. Perkinson heard Kathryn “running up the stairs” from the basement, and upon reaching the top of the basement stairs, she appeared “pale and ashen.” Stella ran past her mother and down the stairs into the basement, but Kathryn blocked Grace Lynn’s path so she could not follow Stella downstairs. Kathryn told Perkinson that she did not feel well, so Perkinson and Grace Lynn left the house.
Downstairs, Gray bound the hands and feet of all the Harveys and placed clear packing tape over their mouths, but he assured them that everything would be okay. Gray and Dandridge then began collecting the items from the home they intended to steal. Kathryn attempted to comfort her distraught daughters, and she told Gray that he should take what he wanted and just leave. Suddenly, Gray took a razor knife and cut Kathryn’s throat and then cut the throats of the young girls and Bryan.5 When Gray saw that his victims were still moving, he took a nearby claw hammer and began repeatedly beating each of the Harveys in the head. When they stopped moving, Gray poured two bottles of wine on an easel in the basement and lit a match, starting the fire. Gray and Dandridge then left the burning home with the items they had stolen.

John Hott, a family friend of the Harveys, arrived at the Harveys’ home for a New Year’s Day party at about 1:45 p.m. and noticed smoke coming from the house. He immediately ran to a neighbor’s home and called “911”.
Less than a week later, Richmond police received a tip that Gray was a suspect in the murders, and a member of the Richmond Police Department contacted the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Police Department requesting they investigate a location where Gray may be staying and to be on the lookout for a particular vehicle believed related to the Harvey murders. In the early morning hours of January 7, 2006, Philadelphia police obtained a search warrant, and a SWAT team entered the location where Gray was suspected to be staying and found him in the basement. Gray was arrested and advised of his Miranda rights. After learning that Dandridge was also being questioned, he asked the Philadelphia police: “Can I tell you my side of the story?”
As part of a signed confession, Gray described in detail how he and Dandridge entered the Harveys’ home and attacked the Harveys, in which he stated:
[I]t was a real nasty scene. How am I suppose[d] to explain something like what happened? I started cutting their throats and they kept getting up and they [were] scaring me. I remember seeing the hammer and picking it up, and then . . . I was just hitting them all with the hammer. All I know is nobody was moving when I left out there.
Gray admitted that Dandridge spent most of this time searching the home for items to steal, and that only Gray used the hammers to attack the Harveys.
Gray stipulated at trial that Bryan’s wedding ring, as well as a cookie plate and a basket from the Harveys’ home, were discovered in a location Gray provided to police, who also recovered from Gray a computer stolen from the Harveys’ home. Gray also stipulated that the boots found at the residence in Philadelphia belonged to him. Bryan and Stella’s blood stains were discovered on Gray’s boots. The Commonwealth also introduced photographs of the dead bodies as exhibits during the trial, and the jury was permitted to view these exhibits. At the time of the murders, Gray was twenty-eight years old. Ruby was four years old at the time of her death, and Stella was nine years old at the time of her death.
The jurors returned a verdict of guilty as to all five capital murder counts as charged in the indictments.

In the sentencing phase, the Commonwealth introduced evidence of Gray’s criminal record, including convictions for robbery in 1996, distribution of crack cocaine in 2000, and possession of cocaine in 2002. Extensive evidence was also presented to show a history of violent acts perpetrated by Gray.
Lieutenant Daniel Stanek of the City of Washington, Pennsylvania Police Department testified about the discovery of the dead body of Gray’s wife, Treva, on November 5, 2005. Gray was questioned at the time but was not arrested for her murder. After his arrest for the murders of the Harveys in January 2006, Gray also confessed to killing his wife with the help of Dandridge by bludgeoning her to death with a lead pipe.
Detective William Brerton of the Richmond Police Department described how, also on January 1, 2006, he learned of another set of murders committed in Richmond. Executing a search warrant, police discovered the dead bodies of Percyell Tucker, his wife, Mary, and Mary’s daughter, Ashley Baskerville6, all in their home. Dr. Darin Trelka, a medical examiner, testified that the autopsy revealed Percyell’s head had been “covered with Saran Wrap,” with a sock stuffed into his mouth and duct-taped shut. Percyell probably struggled for several minutes before he died from suffocation. Mary’s mouth had been gagged, with duct tape over her eyes. Her neck and chest had been cut four times. Mary struggled several minutes before she died from suffocation. Ashley was found with a plastic shopping bag over her head and taped to her neck with duct tape. Her face was wrapped in duct tape and a sock stuffed into her mouth. Ashley also struggled for several minutes before she died from suffocation.
6 Ashley Baskerville was the third person with Gray and Dandridge on January 1 when the Harveys were murdered. During Gray’s confession to the murder of the Tuckers, Gray explained how Ashley was working with Gray and Dandridge and provided them a key to enter the Tucker residence. “She was taped up as part of the plan.”
Gray’s vehicle was discovered three blocks from the Tucker’s home, and the Tucker’s stolen vehicle was located in Philadelphia where Gray was arrested. Gray confessed to murdering the Tucker family.
Police also learned that Gray assaulted a man in Arlington, Virginia on New Year’s Eve, 2005. At the sentencing phase of Gray’s trial, Ryan Carey testified that as he arrived at his parent’s home after work on December 31, he was attacked by two men. He was forced to the ground and stabbed multiple times. Carey escaped the assault and rushed to his father’s home covered in blood. Carey’s father contacted emergency personnel, who took Carey to a hospital where his condition was stabilized. After two months of hospitalization, Carey was able to return home, although he lost the use of his right arm. Gray confessed to assaulting Carey with Dandridge’s assistance and stipulated that Carey’s blood was found on Gray’s boots.
Also testifying at the penalty phase of the trial were Mark Harvey, Bryan’s older brother, and Steven Culp, Kathryn’s older brother. Each described a loving relationship with their sibling and the devastating grief and emotional impact of the murders upon the extended families. ((Gray v. So, Ricky Gray has been given a stay of execution. Well, how nice! The “poor” thing stated, at his trial, that he was abused as a child. Somebody hand me a tissue!
BOTH of the men involved in this crime should have been sentenced to death. It makes no sense that we, the taxpayers, will support Ray Dandridge for the remainder of his life while he watches t.v., plays basketball in the rec yard, eats three meals a day, and is treated to free medical and dental care for the remainder of his life.
What kind of monster commits crimes like this? I don’t give a damn WHAT either of them endured as children, NOBODY deserved to die in such a horrifying manner. ESPECIALLY young children. How do you even DO that a baby or a child and feel NOTHING?
Hopefully, Ricky Gray’s date with the executioner will roll around within the next few months. Personally, I would not want to be either of these men when they finally meet God face to face.

In no way condoning what took place – it is dispicable – however, this boy was brutally sodomized and raped all of his young life, without any professional help. Seems to me he “snapped” which could happen to any human being, at any given time. Let us not judge, unless we are prepared to be judged ourselves.
I really disagree with you that these two just “snapped.” They were driving around looking for a house to rob, they were cold and calculating in murder of not just the four Harvey family members, but also the three Baskerville family members (not to mention Gray’s wife in Pennsylvania who was beaten to death) and the attack on the guy in Northern VA. Four separate acts of despicable violence, with cooling off periods in between each act, hardly constitutes someone who just “snapped.” BTW, Gray, by age 30, could have sought help for himself if he was so traumatized by rape/abuse 15 years earlier.

I never use to believe in capital punishment but after reading this I believe in it. How can a human being do that to another living thing let alone a person or child. The more i hear about these types of things the more time i want to spend with dogs.

I knew the Harveys, they were our friends and neighbors. We lived across the street. We were there that day, we called the fire department. I stood watching as Kathy and dear little Ruby were pulled out of the basement door and placed in the grass beside the herb garden. I saw these thing with my own eyes… I can never forget.
I known such anger… and such hatred… I understand the desire for vengeance and retribution. Part of me would like to kill them with my bare hands… with knife and hammer for what they did to this beautiful family. Every day for nearly two years I had to look at that dark and empty house every day. I can’t explain what this does to a person. it changes you forever.
But I do know this… vengeance gives nothing… it is an empty bowl that cannot be filled. Part of me what Gray to die and yet I know that it offers no answer… it will never bring back little Stella and Ruby… or Bryan and Kathy.
It does no good to cast judgment… and I know in my heart the Bryan, Kathryn, Stella and Ruby would not want this… not in their name. They were all about love… and life… and light.
I am so sorry for what happened to this beautiful family. My tears flow and heart ache with sorrow for them. I pray that they are all in a better place. I also feel sad that you had to witness the aftermath of this horrible scene unfold before you. I cannot imagine … I will pray for you to somehow draw strength and peace of mind in your life. I pray and hope that you gain an understanding of the acceptance of why it was you who had to witness such a traumatic scene. You are in my prayers. May all the victims continue to rest in peace.

I have to say that my daughter went to school with Stella and another friend and the three were called the three mus….:'( can’t say it… It has no ending to the pain for family’s, friends & people who heard the story and were touched or shocked. What is one of the most upsetting for everyone were the children! What some really have not given a lot of discussion on has been the many devistated children left to deal with such horrific crimes against these beautiful little girls. It forever changed my child and of coarse some kids read or find out details later which make it all 100 times greater in the pain they already feel. I reached out to one of the Harvey family members for some closure for my child as it was just so hard for them to move forth & I praise the conversation etc they gave with all they also have continued to go through. Such caring and compassionate people. The girls will never be forgotten and thier parents with such kind hearts live on through so many people. Many prayers and blessings to all the family, friends and children left behind to struggle. Stella loved <3 hearts so make a heart and light a candle in the middle for them.
I will not go into a long story other than to say I'm a surviving victim of abuse and never ever has anything to my thinking to hurt someone else cause I hurt & it really burns me up when that Excuse is used like a bad record. By High School they are shooting, surviving, going to jail, dropping out, lost, suicide, no career, babies having babies etc…is the list of Excuses to now they are killing. We are setting these children up because as adults We No Longer Give Them They Tools For Learning, Survival, Love, Compassion, Conflict Resolution, True Accountability & Consequences. If you discipline your children the law wants to jump in but when the kid doesn't want to go to school or behave at school the law wants then the parent to jump in or now they want to lock a parent up, laughable. Biggest mistake this country ever fell for was to take Prayer out of school and it didn't matter what religion you were or were not, the majority loved it and set for a positive mood for All children cause usually to be Fair to all it was a moment of silence and you did your own prayer or meditation and everyone is ok with meditating I'm sure. Then they stooped the pledge to our own flag, almost no school says are pledge nor know of any of the songs and that is to honor our country, WHY? At a young age we are taking all these children should respect away. These children don't respect adults cause what is to respect as the adults took it all away. We focus only on stupid SOL's that the kids no longer use imaginations in the class rooms nor have fun Learning and you have cornered the teachers to where I don't blame most for not having the drive and love to teach anymore, the system failed both. If higher up continue in this country to run it all the same way like they did the banks, wall street, government, passing of laws, running this country we are in bad shape. Our children in the USA used to be taught, respected & respectable & years ahead in learning but now the children here in the USA are way behind other countries etc is real sad. No Child Left Behind is a Name and a Joke cause its a name and no funding for just a name. I have proof to many children being pulled out of the schools in order to be taught just to read and write & oh yeah by the way how many people know that most of our children no longer have to be taught to write and no longer are taught cursive writing? I was told up to the parents cause that's why they have computers now, Wow! So computers do it all for them, write, spell check, cyber bully others, Facebook even though they aren't to be on it & all kinds of excuses told to parents. Teachers don't put assignments on the computer nor communicate as they are supposed to at all nor are the students doing what needs to be done on these computers as they are Not Mature in Middle School at all & some barely by High School and would be better in college. Text books, writing & old fashioned learning is the best learning you could ever really give a child. A lot goes back to basics and as simple as the dollar bill saying "In God We Trust" to in court raise your right hand & do you swear! Basics of teaching and knowing right from wrong, yes and no, a lie or the truth & without a doubt if you kill your life is over by punishment of death or life in jail no parole, people & kids would stop all these killings. It will not be long the world, the USA really starts to take major dives without major major changes that are positive for all and not the rich getting richer and the poor poorer, but if it stays the same this country will fall or really colapse over the next very few years. I prayed not for myself but my children not to have to experience such grief, but that might just happen sadly. I taught Dandridge and Gray at a local juvenile correctional facility. Dandridge was borderline mentally challenged and Gray was very aloof . I was also neighbor to the Harveys. What I have noticesd their were other familys that were victims…the Baskervilles…the elderly couple in Colonial Heights, Grays wifes family. I would like to say I am a capital punishment advocate ;but I am not…however, in this case….with the children involved? He will have to answer to our maker…I think we can judge on this one. Its not gonna stop murder or senseless killing but….justice will be served.
I was friends with the two of them when we were teens. Hearing about this makes me sick. Ray Dandridge saved my life AND he also carried me all the way home when I fell outside and cut my knee open. They used to be well mannered and so fun. There is no excuse for what they did though. Makes me very sad to know that two decent guys turned into such evil men.
I watched these dudes grow up until 1995..this was not how they were raised nor how we lived…While I am ashamed and totally in shock for what they did…I will always remember our good times. Now tainted with these awful murders. I do know Ricky…Cooley as we know him was raised in a stable home…the abuse I know nothing of…and if that was happening that is news to me…I will not make any excuse for their terrible actions, however; Drug abuse (PCP and heroin) added to how/what PRISON makes a person into..those three, not a good cocktail!

I can’t believe what I have just watched and read. I was not aware of this crime being from the UK but have recently moved abroad. I feel sick and can’t get my head round how these monsters have beaten execution! I’m not a religious person as have had no reason given to me over the past few years to believe anymore. I don’t even agree with the death penalty at times but to do what they have done especially to the babas then I feel that there is no option. Just feel sick to the stomach. Horrible!
I saw yesterday the documentary about this case (in the Netherlands). I felt awfull afther watching this. I have a five year old daughter, I couldn’t imagine how this could happen. And how these parents felt watching their daugthers been slaugthered. They came first…..
For these guys, they had a not very childhood. I know more people who haden’t a very happy childhood, also with sexual abuse. But he, the have A life now, the don’t kill. Espacially no children.

I lived within walking distance from the Harvey’s and the Baskerville’s. That morning I heard the fire trucks and I thought, “Damn, someone’s house is burning on New Year’s Day.” A couple of hours later I heard what had happened. Even though I didn’t know them, I felt very connected to them. I had been in the toy store that the mother owned. I had driven passed the Double Tree Hotel where the husband had performed the night before, on my way home from work. I cried (as I am now) for the neighbors I had never met. Their murders have forever changed me. Up until this tragedy, I thought home invasions involved some drug activity or some prior dealings with the perpetrator(s). Never in my wildest dreams did I think a whole family could be brutally murdered while minding their business in their own home. Call me stupid, but I’d never really thought about it until then. For a long while that’s all that I could think about, it really shook me up. I hope friends and family of both the Harvey’s and Baskerville’s find peace, God bless all of you.

Could all of these deaths been prevented had he YES! Trevas mother has been destroyed because of these events her life her grand children’s life all altered In away horrific way. He deserves death so these living survivors and the victims family can rest a little easier knowing this threat is eliminated.
